Project Prima Volta — PPV — finding voices, shaping futures.
Whether we can handle life's challenges as adults depends on how our teenage years play out. The breaks we get and the opportunities we experience as a young person will ultimately decide the quality of our lives.
That’s why Project Prima Volta exists –– to give teenagers the opportunity to find their own voice, through song and in life.
The Prima Volta Trust offers young people a positive path to learning who they are, finding purpose and meaning through their voices — onstage or off, through song and for life.

Every year Project Prima Volta –– PPV –– helps young people from Hawkes Bay explore their unique potential within the context of sung performance by developing confidence, trust, and skills in a fun and supportive musical environment.
Singing is ubiquitous in all cultures (Mehr, 2019).
Maybe because we need it.
But the intrinsic value of singing is narrowed to an unhelpful specificity in some cultures, whereas in others, it is broadly embraced as vital to the upholding of oral-tradition and key to ‘knowing’ oneself and each other. Prima Volta Trust (PVT) recognises the value and power of the voice, and works to dismantle real and perceived barriers to exploring one’s voice as the original creative tool.
VoiceLab is a programme of active research aligned to PVT objectives. It became an established element of the Prima Volta Trust programme offering in 2018. VoiceLab aims to drive social, educational, and youth outcomes through the transformative power of shared arts practice and insights.
Through VoiceLab, we leverage the insights gained from the Project Prima Volta (PPV) and Festival Opera platforms in order to develop innovative tools and programmes that address and solve issues far beyond the arts sector. The approach explores how arts-based methodologies can enhance community wellbeing, educational engagement, and social cohesion.
The VoiceLab team collaborates closely with kura (schools), community advisors, and other community partners to understand and respond to key challenges. This co-design process ensures that the solutions developed are authentic, creative, and empowering, meeting community challenges head-on. VoiceLab benefits youth, educators, and the local community by offering access to innovative solutions and specialist expertise.
